A humanitarian lawyer, protection professional, and leadership mentor with over 20 years of experience advancing justice in conflict-affected Nigeria.
I am a humanitarian lawyer and protection professional based in Kaduna, Nigeria, with over 20 years of experience designing, leading, and scaling Protection and Rule of Law programs. I specialize in access to justice, protection monitoring, legal empowerment, safeguarding, and gender equality — with a strong track record of delivering high-impact programs in complex and conflict-affected settings.
I was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2002 as a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. I began my career at Legal Awareness for Nigerian Women (LANW), where I managed legal clinics providing counseling, referrals, and representation to women and girls affected by abuse and rights violations.
Since joining the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in 2015, I have progressed through roles including Training and Capacity Building Officer, Senior Protection Officer, Protection Manager, Senior Program Coordinator, and currently Protection and Rule of Law Coordinator. I have provided strategic leadership across five states, overseeing program design, implementation, monitoring, quality assurance, and donor compliance for large-scale humanitarian portfolios.
A key achievement includes spearheading the establishment of Gidan Bayani (Signpost Nigeria), a nationally recognized information and referral platform that has reached over 200,000 people with timely, verified information on legal rights, protection services, and access to justice.
In 2002, Zainab was called to the Nigerian Bar as a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria — the moment that set everything in motion.
From that day, armed with a barrister’s wig and an unshakeable conviction that the law must serve the people who need it most, she went on to build one of the most consequential humanitarian protection careers in Nigeria.
