Zainab is widely recognized for her strategic leadership, commitment to ethical practice, and dedication to mentoring the next generation of humanitarian professionals.
Zainab Oluwabukola Atta is a Nigerian lawyer, protection specialist, and development leader from the distinguished Atta Ibrahim family of Ebira land in Kogi State, Nigeria. She was born in Zaria, Kaduna State, to the late Dr. Ahmed Tijani Atta, a respected obstetrician and gynaecologist, and Mrs. Comfort Atta, a dedicated nurse. Raised in a family rooted in service, professionalism, and compassion, she developed a strong commitment to justice, human dignity, and social impact from an early age.
She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2002 as a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Her academic qualifications include an LL.B in Civil Law, a Bachelor of Law (B.L), a Postgraduate Diploma in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, and a Master’s degree in International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid. She has further strengthened her leadership and professional expertise through certifications in Leadership and Negotiation from Harvard Business Publishing, Atlas Corps Virtual Leadership Institute, and the London School of Economics and Political Science, among others. She is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association, the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators, an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators, and a doctoral member of the Institute for Global Peace and Conflict Management.
Zainab began her professional career in 2003 as a Legal Officer with A.C. Amaechi & Co., where she built a foundation in legal practice. In 2006, she joined Legal Awareness for Nigerian Women (LANW) as a Program Officer, where she managed legal clinics for female survivors of abuse, providing legal counselling, referrals, and representation. During this period, she also led child rights advocacy initiatives in North-West Nigeria in partnership with UNICEF, conducted human rights research, and consulted for international organizations including GRM International, CapacityPlus, and Encompass LLC in the United States. Her work during these years established her as a strong advocate for women’s rights and legal empowerment.

In 2015, she joined the International Rescue Committee as a Training and Capacity Building Officer and steadily rose through the organization to become Senior Protection Officer, Protection Manager, and ultimately Protection and Rule of Law Coordinator. She also served as Acting Field Coordinator for Adamawa State and as Senior Program Coordinator. In these roles, she has provided strategic leadership for protection programming across Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Katsina, and Zamfara States, securing funding from major donors including FCDO, ECHO, and BHA. Under her leadership, protection services reached more than 20,000 clients in 2025 alone. She also spearheaded the launch of Gidan Bayani, the Nigerian Signpost platform, which has provided reliable information to more than 200,000 people. Beyond her technical work, she has served as IRC Nigeria’s Women at Work Coordinator, Global Women at Work Focal Point for West Africa, and GEDI Champion, promoting inclusion, equity, and leadership development within humanitarian programming.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Zainab is a writer and advocate. She co-authored We Rise, an anthology featuring the voices of sixteen women, and uses social media platforms to share reflections on women’s rights, leadership, and language. Her interests also include baking, a passion she pursued for many years before devoting herself fully to legal advocacy and humanitarian service. She is also known for her thoughtful travel reviews of hotels she has visited within and outside Nigeria. Her journey from courtroom advocacy to field-based protection work reflects a lifelong commitment to choosing impact over prestige, using her voice and expertise to protect vulnerable populations and strengthen justice systems across Nigeria.
